The French oil industry giant Total Group said on the 17th that Total bears responsibility for the heavy oil spill on the 16th in Loire, on the Atlantic coast of France, and apologizes to all affected residents and groups.
According to a communique issued by Total on the same day, on the evening of the 16th, when a tanker belonging to the TOTAL Group's winter refinery loaded heavy oil at the Loire estuary, the pipeline malfunctioned, about 100 tons of heavy oil leaked into Hanoi, and about 300 more. France’s Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development Jean-Louis Bolo arrived at the site of pollution on the afternoon of the 17th. He said that although the scale of the leak was not large, it still affected the already fragile ecological environment in the area. He believes that Total reacts slowly to this pollution.
The local government stated that the work to clean up oil has been carried out on the river and on land at the same time. The government also requires residents of the contaminated area not to participate in cleaning up harmful heavy oil.
In December 1999, an oil tanker carrying oil for Total Road sank in the waters of northwestern France as a result of the storm, and more than 20,000 tons of heavy oil leaked into the sea, causing more than 400 kilometers of coastline in this area to be contaminated, causing an ecological disaster.
